Smoking

Smoking and your oral health

At Armagh Dental Clinic, we are committed to helping our patients maintain healthy smiles for life. One of the most important steps you can take to protect your oral and general health is to stop smoking.

Smoking affects far more than just your lungs – it has serious consequences for your teeth, gums and overall wellbeing.

How smoking affects your mouth

Smoking is one of the biggest risk factors for gum (periodontal) disease.

  • Smokers are significantly more likely to develop gum disease than non-smokers
  • Smoking reduces blood flow to the gums, meaning infections can progress more quickly
  • It can mask the early warning signs of gum disease, such as bleeding gums
  • Advanced gum disease can lead to loose teeth and tooth loss

Smoking slows down healing in the mouth. This can affect:

  • Recovery after tooth extractions
  • Healing following gum treatment
  • Success of dental implants
  • Overall response to dental treatment

This is because smoking reduces oxygen in the blood and restricts circulation, both of which are essential for healing.

Smoking is one of the main causes (risk factors) of oral cancer.

Oral cancer can affect the tongue, lips, cheeks and throat. Early detection is vital, which is why we routinely screen for signs of oral cancer during your dental check-ups.

Stopping smoking significantly reduces your risk.

Smoking also causes:

  • Yellow or brown staining of teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Altered sense of taste

Smoking doesn’t just affect your mouth – it affects your whole body.

It is strongly linked to:

  • Lung cancer
  • Mouth and throat cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Reduced immune function

Stopping smoking at any age improves your health and increases life expectancy.

The benefits of stopping smoking begin almost immediately:

  • Improved circulation within weeks
  • Better gum health
  • Reduced risk of oral cancer
  • Improved healing after dental treatment
  • Better overall health and wellbeing

Even long-term smokers see significant health improvements after quitting.

Vaping

E-cigarettes and vapes are often promoted as a safer alternative to smoking. While vaping is generally considered less harmful than smoking traditional cigarettes, it is not risk-free.

Vaping can:

  • Irritate and inflame gum tissues
  • Contribute to gum disease
  • Cause dry mouth, increasing the risk of tooth decay
  • Deliver nicotine, which restricts blood flow and affects healing
  • Expose the mouth to chemicals that may damage soft tissues

Nicotine whether from cigarettes or vapes — can negatively affect gum health and slow healing after dental treatment.

If vaping is being used as a short-term aid to stop smoking, this may reduce harm compared to continued cigarette use. However, long-term use is still not recommended, and the safest option for your oral and general health is to stop using nicotine products altogether.

Many Dentists now consider vaping to be a similar risk to tobacco smoking.
