What Is a Dental Hygienist?

Dental hygienists are highly trained professionals who work closely alongside the dental team to provide essential care for patients. In many cases, they can work independently, and some may also be qualified dentists who offer dedicated hygiene services.

Their role focuses not only on treating dental issues but, most importantly, preventing them before they start.

Hygienists play a key role in:

  • Removing plaque and hardened deposits (calculus)
  • Preventing and treating gum disease
  • Providing personalised oral hygiene advice
  • Offering dietary guidance to reduce tooth decay
  • Helping improve the appearance of your smile by removing stains
  • Managing issues such as bad breath (halitosis)
What Is a Dental Hygienist?

Plaque is a soft, sticky film that constantly forms on your teeth. It is made up mainly of bacteria.

These bacteria feed on sugars from the foods and drinks we consume. As they do, they produce acids that can:

  • Damage tooth enamel (leading to decay)
  • Irritate the gums (leading to gum disease)

If plaque is not removed effectively through brushing and cleaning, it can become more harmful over time.

Tartar, also known as calculus, is hardened plaque that builds up on the teeth.

Unlike plaque, tartar:

  • Cannot be removed by brushing or flossing at home
  • Requires professional removal by a dental hygienist

If left untreated, tartar can contribute to:

  • Gum disease
  • Tooth decay
  • Persistent bad breath

The most important aspect of dental hygiene care is prevention.

Even with excellent home care, it is impossible to remove all plaque and food debris yourself. Regular hygiene visits help to clean areas that are difficult to reach and keep your gums and teeth healthy.

We generally recommend:

  • At least two hygiene visits per year for most patients
  • Up to four visits per year for those more prone to gum disease or requiring additional maintenance

Your hygienist will advise you on the best schedule for your individual needs.

Hygiene treatments typically involve a scale and polish, where plaque, tartar, and surface stains are carefully removed from your teeth.

For most patients, this treatment is comfortable and pain-free. However, some people may experience sensitivity, especially if there is existing gum inflammation or exposed tooth surfaces.

If you have experienced discomfort in the past, please let our hygiene team know. We can make your visit more comfortable by using:

  • Numbing (anaesthetic) gels
  • Local anaesthetic when needed

Your comfort is always our priority, and we will work with you to ensure a positive and relaxed experience.
