Extractions
Tooth extraction is always considered a last resort. Our primary aim is to preserve your natural teeth wherever possible and prevent tooth loss through early diagnosis and treatment. However, in some situations—such as severe decay, advanced gum disease, fractures, or very loose teeth—removal may be the most appropriate option.
All of our General Dental Practitioners (GDPs) are trained to carry out routine tooth extractions safely and comfortably. We will always ensure you are fully informed and at ease before proceeding with treatment.
Some teeth, however, can be more complex to remove. This may include impacted teeth or cases that require a surgical approach. In these situations, we work closely with our sister clinic, Precision Implant Clinic, where more advanced and specialist care can be provided if required.
For patients who feel anxious or nervous about having a tooth removed, we can also arrange treatment with sedation to help you feel more relaxed. Sedation services will also be available at Armagh Dental Clinic in the near future.
Following your extraction, we will provide full aftercare support and advice to ensure comfortable healing. If you experience any problems after your treatment, our team is here to help and will provide ongoing care as needed
We can also arrange treatment with sedation at Precision Implant Clinic to help you feel more relaxed. Sedation services will be available at Armagh Dental Clinic at a future date.
Before the procedure, your dentist will assess the tooth and take any necessary X-rays to plan the extraction safely. The area will then be fully numbed using local anaesthetic to ensure you are comfortable throughout.
Once the tooth is numb, the dentist will gently loosen and remove it. You may feel some pressure during the procedure, but you should not feel pain. For more complex cases, a surgical approach may be required, which will be fully explained to you in advance.
After the tooth is removed, a small gauze pack is placed over the area to help stop any bleeding and encourage clot formation. You will be given clear instructions before leaving the practice.
Following an extraction, it is important to allow the area to heal properly. Some mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising is normal for a few days after treatment.
We recommend:
- Biting gently on the gauze provided to help stop bleeding
- Avoiding rinsing, spitting, or using straws for the first 48 hours
- Eating soft foods and avoiding very hot food or drinks initially
- Keeping the area clean while avoiding direct brushing over the extraction site
- Taking any recommended pain relief as advised
